Learn weaving techniques under the guidance of local Indigenous artist and Kaurna Woman, Elaine Magias
“I am a Kaurna woman, taught this traditional weaving skill by an Elder many years ago.
My first entry into a recent art show won the People’s Choice prize.
I have been hosting cultural weaving workshops for 5 years. Instructing participants to make baskets, mats, wall earrings and pendants.
To learn to weave in my workshops is not limited to weaving alone, I like to provide a fuller cultural experience.
I create and support a safe and comfortable environment where when people come together to weave, conversations flow very easily, people are encouraged to ask me cultural questions, including Aboriginal diversity of language, art, cultural practices, food and beliefs.
I believe this environment is important in building reconciliation.”
In my weaving workshops participants learn a variety of skills, including:
Diversity of natural materials
Preparation of materials
Starting techniques
Secure beginning and ending stitches
Add more materials to increase size
Build a 2-dimensional shape
Tapering off and ending the weave
All materials are provided and included in the price.
Bookings are essential and spaces are limited.
