Un-silencing Older Women Symposium

The un-Silencing of Older Women National Congress & Symposium

This year’s Embolden Festival is a powerful opportunity to learn about practical strategies to prevent ageism and elder abuse and to promote respect for older people.

Last updated: 28 August 2024

The theme this year is the [un]Silencing of Older Women. We have responded to calls for accessibility - by hosting the event online and making it free (you are also welcome to pay to register)

Did you know?

Older women face significant inequalities, including:

  • older women are the lowest income earning family group

  • 34% of single older women live in poverty

  • 60% of older women leave paid work with no super women with super have 28% less than men

  • 60% of older women rely entirely on old age pension

  • 40% increase in homelessness for older women

  • Older women are more likely to experience workplace discrimination

  • 28 family violence homicides/attempted homicides of older women (55+) in 2023

  • 14% of older people experience elder abuse – victims are more likely to be women

  • 23% of women aged 60 years+ have experienced physical or intimate partner violence

  • older women are more likely to be sexually assaulted

Despite these inequalities, we currently don't have a gender lens for Elder Abuse prevention - and there are no resources exploring a life stages approach to family violence. To help address these gaps, #Embolden2024 will present a gender lens and life stages approach to delegates.
