Enhanced support for responding to elder abuse

It can be difficult for GPs to raise concerns about elder abuse, but new training aims to help those at the coalface identify the signs and act.

The most recent report from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety contained ‘damning’ stories of abuse and neglect of older people in Australia, and led to calls for fundamental reform of the aged care sector and several recommendations.

Recognising the signs of elder abuse

Research shows when it comes to elder abuse, older women are most at risk. Worse, it’s often a family member who inflicts the abuse.

Latest statistics from the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission indicate 77 per cent of the almost 3000 reports it received in 2020 about people who were subject to, or at risk of, abuse, neglect and exploitation related to older people, most of whom were women.

Preventing Abuse of Older People
