In a significant win for equal accessibility, Darwin Community Legal Services' Seniors' and Disability Rights Service (SDRS) proudly announces the approval of a $63,000 Community Support Grant for the installation of a wheelchair lift at Maningrida Airport. This achievement follows two years of relentless advocacy efforts by the SDRS team, marking a step towards a more inclusive community.

In December 2021 SDRS received a referral from Children Ground, highlighting the need for enhanced accessibility at Maningrida Airport. The SDRS team embarked on a comprehensive research initiative, engaging in on-the-ground consultations and rallying community support. A petition, signed by over 85 concerned citizens of Maningrida, underscored the urgency of the cause.

SDRS's advocacy efforts extended beyond grassroots initiatives. Project lead, Ramnik Walia, hosted and attended numerous consultations and meetings with the office of the Chief Minister and Minister for Disabilities, Ngaree Ah Kit, highlighting the lack of accessibility at Maningrida Airport.

During these consultations, statements were provided in relation to human rights which focused on equal and inclusive access to Aviation services.

The Office of the Chief Minister approved a funding proposal in September of this year. The news was officially conveyed through written correspondence to lan McLay, Chief Executive Officer of the Maningrida Progress Association. This funding, amounting to $63,000, stands as a testament to the power of community-driven advocacy and determination.

"This grant signifies more than just financial support; it represents a victory for inclusivity and equal opportunities," said Mr Walia, Senior Advocate at DCLS. "We are immensely grateful for the collaborative efforts of the community and the responsiveness of our decision-makers. Together, we are fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of mobility challenges, can navigate public spaces with dignity and independence."
