One Far North Queensland sexual assault support service says it's helped 41 older women in the past three years.
This comes as a Queensland parliamentary committee currently inquiring into the issue of elder abuse is due to hand down a report in December.
The sexual abuse of older people, especially women, is "one of the most neglected forms of elder abuse" according to advocates.
The number of alleged incidents of unlawful sexual contact in residential aged care facilities is estimated to be about 50 a week, according to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety's report, which described it as a "disgrace".
A Queensland parliamentary inquiry has been established to investigate the devastating consequences of elder abuse — including physical, sexual, psychological, emotional and financial — to better protect older people from harm.
Di Macleod, who has helped victims for 35 years at the Gold Coast Centre Against Sexual Violence, said the chance to give evidence and put a spotlight on the often "invisible" sexual abuse of older people was important.
