On April 3, 2025 the United Nations Human Rights Council, supported by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, adopted a resolution to form a working group for older persons' rights: the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing.

This is an important development because, after many years of work and advocacy by national human rights institutions, NGOs, civil society, and supportive governments, the UN Human Rights Council has agreed to progress a framework that should eventuate in a new UN convention on the human rights of older persons.
