The Financial Abuse of Older People Action Collaborative, led by the Australian Human Rights Commission with funding from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department, recently held its first meeting to develop practical measures to identify, respond to and prevent financial exploitation.

The initiative builds on the Commission’s Financial Elder Abuse Project 2023-24 and supports the National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2026-36.

About one in six older Australians experience abuse, including financial abuse. Increasing cost-of-living pressures, delays in intergenerational wealth transfers and concerns about so-called “inheritance impatience” are expected to increase the risk of financial exploitation.

Banking giants Westpac and CBA are among the organisations.
