Unpaid carers struggle without basic needs

Around three million Australians are unpaid carers but often feel "overlooked" and go without despite their efforts to help another person stay alive, according to a new national survey.

More than 10,000 people nationwide responded to the 2024 National Carer Survey, with the findings released in March painting a stark picture of who these carers are.

"Many carers are doing it tough, often going without basic essentials like food and healthcare, while shouldering the immense responsibility of looking after their loved ones," said Elena Katrakis, Carers NSW CEO.
