At least 6.5 million Australians will not have a say in who inherits their superannuation, according to new research from Super Consumers Australia shared exclusively with ABC News.
That's because of the way super members are prompted to let funds know who gets their savings after their death.
Australians have the option of making a "non-binding" nomination — a quick process that can be completed online — or a "binding" nomination — a more arduous, typically manual, process but one that is legally binding.
More than a third of those surveyed by Super Consumers Australia had no death benefit nomination at all registered with their super fund — a further 25 per cent didn't know if their nomination was binding.
Here's what you need to know about nominating who will receive your super once you die and how to ensure your wishes are complied with.
