Empowering Retirement Village residents: Advocacy, Information, and Education

Older South Australians living in retirement villages can access dedicated support through the Aged Rights Advocacy Service (ARAS) webpage and resources.

As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, ARAS has been championing the rights of older people since 1990.

With funding from Office for Ageing Well (Department of Human Services) Retirement Villages Unit, ARAS offers free advocacy, education, and information to help residents understand their rights and address any concerns under the Retirement Villages Act 2016 and Retirement Villages Regulations 2017.

How ARAS supports residents

Residents can turn to ARAS for assistance with a wide range of issues, such as ongoing and exit fees, maintenance and repairs, contract clarity, dispute resolution with management or neighbours, and navigating the complaints process.

ARAS Advocates are skilled in raising concerns with village management, facilitating mediation through the Retirement Villages Unit, and guiding residents through applications and hearings with the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT).

For those who wish to self-advocate, ARAS provides practical advice and strategies and can refer to legal services if required.
