New laws to uphold your rights

The new Aged Care Act gives older people new rights to high-quality, safe and responsive care. This webpage outlines what your rights as an older person are.

Your aged care provider must respect and uphold your rights and support you to make choices. They should make you feel supported if you want to raise a concern or provide feedback.

If you have a complaint or concern, here’s what you can do:

  • Talk to your aged care provider. Every provider must have a complaints system in place that is easy to understand and access.

  • Contact the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.

  • Get in touch with the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN). OPAN has advocates who can listen to your concerns, explain your rights and speak on your behalf.
