The Biscuit Tin project

This unique project raises awareness of older women's contributions, and the need for respect.

The rates of financial hardship, homelessness, violence and abuse of older women are increasing. These inequalities are driven by a particularly caustic form of ageism entangled with sexism/misogny.

We need to build respect for older women, and recognise that without the contributions of older women, Australia would grind to a halt.

The Biscuit Tin project raises awareness of older women's contributions, and the need for respect.

A biscuit tin is an iconic, cross cultural symbol of older women's caring and nurturing.

In consultation for the project, older women told us they want to see their caring and nurturing roles recognised, alongside all the contributions they make.

The project centres around workshops for older women, documenting their photo portraits and contributions.

A Recipes for Respect resource developed from each workshop includes biscuit recipes and stories about how older women experience respect in families, communities, workplaces, services and policy.

The project also includes education for service providers and an exhibition/launch event for community.

A report on the evaluation of the project pilots demonstrates positive outcomes in the workshop, staff education, and community engagement activities.

The Biscuit Tin project is part of the #OlderWomenCount program, developed by Celebrate Ageing Ltd, in partnership with the Older Women's Network NSW.

Celebrate Ageing has developed a Facilitator's Kit or step by step instructions and license for services and groups interested in facilitating #TheBiscuitTin.
