Hobart Community Legal Service

The Hobart Community Legal Service provides free legal information advice and referrals to people in southern Tasmania.

We can help you with almost any legal matter, including issues with Centrelink debts or appeals, consumer rights disputes with your telecommunications provider or insurance company, employment and fair work issues, or family violence, child support or criminal matters.

You can attend one of our free legal information evenings, call us to talk through your legal issue, or make an appointment to meet with one of our lawyers.

Here’s a list of some of the legal problems we help with. If you don’t see your issue listed, please get in touch to see how we can help.

Centrelink

Are you having problems with Centrelink? Do you need help to understand your welfare rights, or manage debts or an appeals process? Our Welfare Rights Service can provide you with free information, advice and representation to help get you back on track.

Child Support/Family Law

Understanding and managing child support or family law matters can be difficult. We can support you with advice on all aspects of the Child Support Scheme, and free legal information on all areas of family law.

Consumer Issues

Trying to resolve a dispute with your telco, insurance company or credit provider can be time consuming, frustrating, and costly. Our free service offers you legal information and advice to help you manage your consumer issue or dispute.

Criminal

Are you dealing with a traffic offence, family violence matter, or other minor criminal issue? Talk to us about obtaining free and confidential legal advice, information and representation.

Employment

If you’re experiencing a dispute at work, you need to know your rights. We can help you obtain legal advice and representation for workplace issues ranging from unfair dismissal or discrimination to workplace bullying and underpaid wages.

Family Violence / Restraint Orders

Family violence and elder abuse can affect anyone, and it can have a devastating impact on everyone involved. If you, or people close to you, have been affected by family violence or elder abuse and you need legal advice, we’re here to help.

HCLS operates out of two conveniently placed locations in the Southern Tasmania region. We encourage clients to visit their nearest office where possible. The Hobart office is our head office and all information evenings are held at this location.
