Who Gets to Die Well?

The politics, policies and ethics of palliative care for older people

Last updated: 29 October 2026

Despite the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety finding that “palliative care and end-of life care is core business” for aged care providers (outcome 5.7), receiving access to that care remains patchy.

How much of the problem is determined by government policy or the culture of medicine and healthcare? How much of the problem is staff training? What role does funding and regulation play? And what about our societal and individual attitudes to death and our willingness to discuss it?

This webinar presents an impressive line-up of expert commentators to explore the myriad complexities of the politics, policies and ethics of palliative care for older people.

In this webinar you will:

  • Gain a better understanding of the role and significance of palliative care and other end-of life support for older people as a recognised human right.

  • Explore the options available for older people with palliative care needs in the community, hospital and residential care settings – where they are succeeding and where they are falling short.

  • Hear from commentators who have recent personal experience and thoughtful observations.

  • Explore the myriad of factors contributing to the inequity associated with dying well in the older population.

  • Participate in a discussion and debate regarding the way forward including potential recommendations for the future.
