78-year-old James contacted ADA Law’s SLASSS team with the assistance of care staff at the RACF.
James was placed into residential aged care but previously had regularly accessed the community RSL hall. At the time of referral, James asked staff to help him look into any transport that could be funded/part funded by DVA Benefits.
James also had concerns that he was not being charged the correct Daily Care fees.
James reported that family members reside over 500km away from him, and that James’s son is his financial attorney under an Enduring Power of Attorney.
James reports feeling socially isolated and distressed at not being able to access the community as easily following a fall from his mobility scooter.
SLASSS referred James to the ADA Financial Advocates, who confirmed that his DVA Benefits questions could be answered by DVA Advocacy, and a referral was made to that program.
The ADA Financial Advocates assisted SLASSS in the review of James’ Daily fees and confirmed that they were being correctly charged.
These fees were explained to James, and he agreed that he was happy with the services in place continuing.
James will continue to engage with SLASSS and has reported to SLASSS that he feels more capable of being involved in decisions about his financial matters, and that he will contact the DVA advocates to access benefits.
