Shamara is an older woman living alone in North West Queensland. Her son was living with her while going through his marriage break up. During this time, the ex-daughter-in-law was regularly sending them both nasty and sometimes threatening messages, which has continued even after Shamara’s son moved out. Shamara is concerned for her safety, so she sought help to put a DFV Order in place. Due to Shamara’s cognitive needs, this required several phone calls and in person visits, before being ready to proceed with the application. The team also engaged with the other party’s Legal Aid representative, aiming to reduce the conflict and minimise the risk to Shamara. On the day of the Magistrates Court hearing, both parties agreed to settle and sign undertakings to cease all relevant behaviours. Shamara has also been connected with local service providers to assist her with home care support, so she is feeling better in her own home.
